SeventyMillion Irish

A network for people of Irish heritage

I know that it is far,..... but is very cheap, beautifull, interesting, full of emotions and nice people and places to visit.
Why do not join all the Irish diaspora in Argentina??
It is not so impossible to do !!
If it is not in 2009...may be 2010 or 2011... what do you think??

Hi Ruben,

Oh, I do like that idea. I love that idea! Argentina!! You've got the largest non-English speaking community over there! It would be something else!

Nick and I haven't anything planned yet. We are just thinking about it at the moment. And, in many ways, what we do will depend on how we get on with the map project. But we do want to mark the end of the project with some kind of event which in some way captures what the project is all about.

For example, I was thinking of having some kind of online and offline event where people could come and see all the comments and things people have said about irishness over the year and all the information we have captured.

And I always liked fireworks. It'd be great to do something with fireworks!

Karl and Nick,

I am sorry to tell you that there will not be an "END OF PROJECT", perhaps there will be an "END OF THE FIRST STEP". This is a very great project and also a "NEVER END"one.
Hopefully when we reach the SEVENTYMILLONS members, we will have to go for an extra millon, and another millon, and so, and so.

Your ideas sound very good.

Funny you should say that about the "end of the project" because I was sending off emails to lots of Irish clubs in England and Canada (that's how we are trying to get more people on the map) and as I did so I had the thought that perhaps this project might take a little longer than a year. You are right. This is just the first stage.

I have the feeling that this is just the beginning of trying to create a true global Irish community. We are all so distant and disparate and, with Ireland no longer sending people out to the world, we need to do something to hang on to the community.

But I also think that the future is with the FBIs (Foreign Born Irish.) They are the future of the global Irish community. I don't think Ireland will be as vibrant in its contribution to the community in the future.

As a people we have a huge resource that we can use for good. Whether it is to help each other, share and promote our common culture or create something more significant. The reality is that it can only be us (Irish-born as well as FBIs) as a people that makes something of the future.

So yes, this is just the first step. And maybe it's a neverending one. But I have to admit that from the little we have learnt so far, and the few people (like yourself) I have connected with so far, I feel that this is a very exciting thing to be part of.

So, tomorrow i'll get on the laptop and start sending out some more email. We might just get there. We might just find that seventymillion.

A sound plan!

The criac is good in Buenos Aires as are the Irish connections (it was an Irishman Guillermo (William) Brown who founded the Argentine navy) not to mention the impressive fireworks displays I've seen over there.

What is is this? Is this the Argentinian tourist agency at work? There's now two of you selling the charms of Buenos Aires. Not that it needs selling. Do you know, depending on how we get on with this project, part of me really wants to do something in Argentina. There's such a massive Irish link there.
