SeventyMillion Irish

A network for people of Irish heritage

Hi all,

The project is a couple of days old now and we're slowly beginning to get people adding themselves to the map of global Irish. We've got a long way to go. What do you think that we can do to further promote the project and get it out there to lots and lots of people. Share your ideas here:

Well, I dropped an email to the Irish programme on my local BBC radio station, as i know a lot of ex-pats and 2nd generation listen there. Also, being in Birmingham (UK), this place is teeming with us!

Michelle,

That's great! Broadcast media, eh? We might just be hitting the big time. I also found a site in the UK called IrishinBritain.com, and they posted my email asking for help. We'll see what develops.

I will add a link in our blog in UruguayIreland.com and send an invite to a coleague in Buenos Aires. There is a big Irish community there. Contacting regional communities might help a lot.

Conrad,

Great idea. I like your site too and have added it to our blogroll on the mapping site, www.seventymillion.org. Interesting to read on the blog that there is a place in Argentina call Ciudad de O'Brien (O'Brien City) founded in 1909 by Edward O'Brien Cavanagh and Jane Bohan from Wexford in Ireland.

Many thanks for your comments. With respect to your question re how to find the 70 million, I think you are on the right track. You have just started something that, given enough time, will surely meet it's goal. It can't get anywhere else. Our goal with UruguayIreland.com is pretty much the same though less ambitious. We want to bring the Irish in Uruguay together and also link with the Uruguayans in Ireland. This is slowly but steadily building up.

Last year we met David McWilliams in Montevideo during the make of "The Generation Game". David spoke of 80 million! A couple of weeks ago we met Vince Hearns, from the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, on holidays in Uruguay with his wife Mona. Grianan played some Irish music at a pub for them and then we spoke over a few of pints. He told us of the concept of "the forgotten cousin". He was also surprised to find these Irish connections.

I'm glad to see some contacts I referred your site to are beggining to register. I warned you there is a big community in Argentina.

If you can post to all the Irish Facebook groups as you can...I've started you off on London Irish Craic which as over 600 members. Also gumtree is a highly popular website for Irish people. This is a fab site, one that was very much need for everyone Irish round the world. Thanks for setting it up!
