good to see you back on the site with your usual thoughtful comments. the thought that occurred relates to the meaning of the phrase 'Irish diaspora'--is it merely a socio-geneological designation?; or, does it mean we are--in some sense--a people?…

‘Imprecise writing,’ good point. To which should be added, I think, the questions posed & their framing. The first part of AM’s posting, his wanting to hear about people’s sense of Irish heritage, struck me as at odds with the list of questions and…

my turn to rant about the Irish Heritage 'discussion.'   What started out as an example of George Bernard Shaw's comment about two nations being separated by a common language has degenerated into what I perceive as nastiness, arrogance, a lack of…

Most Americans are quite surprised to learn that factoid. Incidentally, for those who do not know Dublin, the Portobello reference in the Herzog article is worth reading. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portobello,_Dublin

What does your Irishness mean to you?
Possessing an anarchic yet disciplined spirit bordering always on the politically incorrect, sustained by spirits distilled and benign,by poetry and music, and by God knows what else; I am secure in the knowledge that I am part of a people that are always correct, especially when no two people agree on any one thing, and thus, am always on the other side of two persons arguing with each other. Being Irish is itself a contradiction: the only place in the world I am not Irish is Ireland, yet I am Irish.

Irish Economy II: Morgan Stanley scenario analyses on Ireland's fiscal sustainability

I am interested in what the "boots on the ground" have to say about how life has changed over the past year & about the outlook for the next year or two. What follows is a very brief summary of a Morgan Stanley report on the legacy of the banking crisis. It is not quite as elegant has Heaney & Joyce though the vocabulary used will make you think of Heaney gone awry.

Irish Economy: I. Bonds Outperform as Convergence Trade Returns

This is not to suggest the Irish economy is booming; rather, investors believe their worst fears will not be realized. Nevertheless, the story is positive relative to six months ago.

Dith da Terrence! That's good day in Cumbric (Celtic language of Northern England and Southern Scotland). It's been dead for centuries but is under revival, and this is a version of it, recontructed by the founder of the Cumbric revival community network Anthony ap Anthony O'Rheged.
Anyway, go raibh maith agat for your reply! Your grandchildren are cute! One reminds me of one of my cousins I grew up with, when he was a baby lol!

Just took the time to listened to the Dave Allen video. Years ago (when I was still in the end stages of my formative years) I lived in London for an extended time and Allen's television program was a weekly staple in my evening hours. He was definitely a thought provoking commentator... He used to sit in that high chair, finger missing on the hand that cradled alternatively a cigarette or the glass of whiskey (I'm just assuming it wasn't scotch)... Thanks for sharing the video.

Thank you for the great idea of Irish "Favorites"! In thinking of these subjects I realize how much my life has been influenced by Irish culture. I didn't know until about 8 years ago how strong our Irish connection was (when I met the Irish clan). I was born on St. Patrick’s day and had red hair and attributed these to my sense of "Irishness." One of the only concerts I went to as a kid was "the Irish Rovers." However, genetics are much stronger than we can imagine and through my life there has been a really significant influence. Regardless of even these things I think that the Irish influence is a very powerful for the American culture in general. Such a small place and such a big influence! AND…they did all the above with SO little.
