I had more respect for the IRA when they were only concerned with getting independence from Britian. Then, they got radicalized and became a terrorist organization. We have enough problems with terrorists trying to overthrow our democratic system, w…

Actually, it was the Zimmerman Plot of 1917 that brought the USA into the war. What is unforgiveable is that when Ireland became an independent country, successive generations of the IRA sought aid from Nazi Germany and Gaddaffi's Lybia to overthro…

You're right, Karl. It was in their history to ask others for help in their struggle to be free. The Irish population never got behind the Rising. However, when General Maxwell started executing people, that got their "Irish up", as mom used to say.

What does your Irishness mean to you?
It means a history of struggle and oppression by foreigners. It means survival despite the circumstances. It means pride in the history of the Irish and sometimes the shame of how some, including me, have handled the struggle.

The Easter Rising of 1916

I have been reading the book "Rebels - The Irish Rising of 1916". It was a heck of a time. It was shabbily organized, but it appears it struck a cord in the the rest of Ireland (not at that time but eventually) and the world.

The men and women, yes women, involved were courageous people to stand up to the brutality of the English rule. Some were teachers, some were part of the gentry, one was a Marxist, another was a closet homosexual, but all were united in their efforts to free Ireland. The a… Continue

The Kerr (Karr) Clan & Genealogy Records

My Kerrs came from Dundalk, County Louth. Grandpa Karr changed the surname from Kerr to Karr. It had to do with the name Kerr being misconstrued with a German surname. He changed it during one of the world wars. So far, there is no indication which war that would be.

In my research of the name, I came to find out the Kerr clan has 2 distinct branches. The first being the Scottish branch, which claims to be the original branch. They are more boisterous about it, though. The Kerr Family Associati… Continue

Trying to Connect with the Mother Country

I have been actively pursuing my genealogical roots for the past 5 years, which by many standards is not long. Then again, according to my wife, it's 10 years too long. During this time, I have sent dozens of letters to people in Ireland looking for a connection most with Int… Continue

Thanks for your comment. I would think that all Irish came from somewhere before and there appears to be a strong Phoenecian connection for many. This is going back pretty far.

Wooooooooo! Chills! I was also born on St. Patricks day! Have you looked beyond "before" Ireland to the Phoenicia link?

Hi Jerry,

Thanks so much for joining our Network.

We have set this up as a place for people to get involved and exchange ideas about the SEVENTYMILLION Project. Of course, only get involved if you want to, no pressure!

If you just want to hang out and meet other Irish people from around the world, ask a question of our community, post a blog, add some music, or start a group, please do.

I notice that you said you wanted to meet other people in your area. Why not create a Chicago Group, so that when other people from your area join up, you can meet?

The site is pretty straightforward, but if you have any questions, just give me a shout.

Karl
