Sam Norwich Thinking about a trip to Ireland

Last year we won round trip plane tickets to anywhere on British Airways. We are thinking about a trip to Ireland. We have our passports and travel health insurance ready to go. But we do not want to go on a mainstream tour. We want to find an itinerary that takes us to the little towns and country Inns. We want to meet and see the real Ireland, not the tourist Ireland. Can anyone direct us to a place that help us acco… Continue

I'e always found this version of St Brigid's Prayer a good addition to the goings on of the 17th...

I’d like to give a lake of beer to God

I’d love the heavenly

Host to be tippling there

For all Eternity

I’d love the men of heaven to live with me

Dennis Valot Mullen and O'Connell families

I am looking for any information (e.g. places of birth) regarding my Irish great grandparents/great-great grandparents. My great grandfather was Henry Mullen, born 29 Jan 1856 in Northern Ireland to John Mullen and Mary Kelly. He immigrated to the U.S in 1872, probably accompanied by his brother, Edward Mullen.

My great grandmother was Anna O'Connell, born on 17 March (a magic day), 1859 in England to Irish parents, James O'Connell and Margaret O'Rorke. Anna immigrated to the U.S. in 1

Margot B The Vikings and Baron Dupuytren's disease

Dupuytren’s disease (DD) is an ancient affliction of unknown origin. It is defined by Dorland as shortening, thickening, and fibrosis of the palmar fascia producing a flexion deformity of a finger. Tradition has it that the disease originated with the Vikings, who spread it throughout Northern Europe and beyond as they traveled and intermarried. After being present for hundreds of years, DD was named in the 19th century after a famous French surgeon,… Continue

Tom The Daily Telegraph - Douglas Murray Anti-Irish Blog Article

Has anyone read The Daily Telegraph anti-Irish blog article written by Douglas Murray (see links below)? Essentially Mr. Murray invites his readers to submit jokes about Irish people, as you can imagine a lot of the submissions are derogatory and insulting towards Irish people. I filed a complaint with the Press Complaints Commission and The Daily Telegraph. I thought we were past all of that so-called Irish joke nonsense.

William Karr The Easter Rising of 1916

I have been reading the book "Rebels - The Irish Rising of 1916". It was a heck of a time. It was shabbily organized, but it appears it struck a cord in the the rest of Ireland (not at that time but eventually) and the world. The men and women, yes women, involved were courageous people to stand up to the brutality of the English rule. Some were teachers, some were part of the gentry, one was a Marxist, another was a closet homosexual, but all were united in their efforts to free Ireland. The a… Continue

Tom Macmurray Making a Good Confession

A Good Confession. Sure. Bless me father for I have sinned. It has been one week since my last confession (that was a lie; it had been more like a month and I’m sure Father Artman knew since he was the only priest for about twenty miles so it was either him or no confession.) So how could it have been a “good confession” if the first thing I said was a lie. Of course in retrospect, what does an eight year old boy in a small town East of County Clare and South of County Roscommon know about how… Continue

Tom Macmurray Am I Irish or am I Scots

Sounds like a silly title, Am I Irish or Am I Scots, but it was a question that I asked at my Fathers Funeral. There had been some controversy that day as the woman for whom my father was her third husband tried to get the local priest to force me into some "Well this is the way we usually do it" frame work. The woman had married my father eight or nine years after my mothr had died and she could never accept being a part of his family. Instead she was trying to make my father a part of her fami… Continue

Finally noticed your note of last August. Thanks for responding. The Geneology dna thing has been fun. I got started from reading a new book by Bryan Sykes of Oxford U.: SAXSONS, VIKINGS AND CELTS. This discusses his dna research of the y chromosome(male) and its distribution around the world and use in tracing ancestry. I then read his book: THE SEVEN DAUGHTERS OF EVE, his resarch of the Mtdna(female) dna. He has placed all females on earth into 7 dna classifications. Mtdna mutates much slowe… Continue

Kevin Patrick Joyce Irish Skin

My family on both sides are Irish American. However we have dark hair and skin. I used to hear the term "black irish" when I was a kid. In the service I had some hispanic soldiers speak to me in Spanish. My Dad claims we have this from the Spanish Armada shipwrecked sailors off the coast of Erin. I'm waiting for any opinion. Thanks Kevin Joyce Continue
